    MMMMMMM...CUPCAKES

Just ran across this amazing little site, and all of a sudden I feel the need to eat bake pretty little cupcakes: Bake it Pretty!

    Look Look Look!
    Pretty Striped Cups!
    Pretty Flower Cups!

    Little Deer Toppers!

    Beer Can Toppers!  Wait.
They've also got some badass candy molds:

    Mmmmm...bacon...

    Annnnnddd, a boombox.
Okay, so it might not all be pretty, but it's all pretty awesome.
No really, now I need a cupcake.  Like, now.

    ARE THEY IN MY HEAD?

Seriously.  November Domino.  SO GREAT.  Back when House & Garden folded, I didn't think that any shelter mag would really take the place of instant inspiration for me, but Domino is really stepping it up lately, and with the new art direction this month, I'm weak with ideas...it's like they know exactly what's turning me one right now.

And I know that these have been ALL over the internet, but they are just so great:

    Exhibit A:

    Aaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnndd B:

    C is for CRAZY FABULOUS:

     And in conclusion:

    SHAZAAM!  BRILLIANT!

    COZY IN MY HOUSE.

I just spent the last hour listening to this, mesmerized:

    House on Loon Lake

Absolutely UH.MAY.ZING. Seriously, it's worth listening to, and make sure you listen all the way to the end...WOW.

So it's raining out, I've got the windows open, the house is (relatively) clean, and I'm able to spend the day just relaxing on the couch reading some magazines. And listening to radio shows.

Life is good. Just wanted to share.

    OH MY GOD FABULOUS

These coats make me want to move back to Montana for the soul purpose of having to require coats made of wool just to make it through the winter.  Gah!  The buttons!  Swoon!  The collars! So delicious.

From Soya & Kyo.  They are Cannay-dyeen.  Brilliant.  Check out the site even if you're not interested in the coats.  The interface is pretty cool as well.

    ISN'T SHE PRETTY!

Say hello the latest addition to our little family:

She just got her new clothes today, courtesy of StudioJK at Etsy.  Isn't it great!

I love her so much!  And I love B for getting her for me!  Best. Gift. Ever.

But now my roomates think that I will turn into a hermit and never leave the house.

Like I left the house so much before?  Seriously.  Come on now.  I'm not a partier, and never will be.  I just need some time to myself to shake off 6 months of stress at work and so I don't kill both of you with my bare hands.

    So chill.

    HANDMADE HEAVEN

I have become obsessed with ESTY again. Not so much with the selling, but totally with the buying. I've spent lunches the last week just shopping on ETSY. And the vintage stores! GAH! So much goodness.

I think I do so much sourcing and trending and just plain 'ole shopping, that I just get tired of everything that's out there. It all just seems the same anymore. Nothing new or original. It's all LeTired. Somebody actually took the time to craft/ source the stuff on ETSY. And it's mostly one of a kind, which is quite nice.

I highly recommend the Pounce feature. I've clicked it about 357 times in the last 45 minutes.

This all raises a very important question. How to we feel about toilet graphics? Yes? No? Not on your life?

    SOME BAD, SOME GOOD

Spent yesterday shopping for things I need. Note I said things I NEED, not necessarily things I WANT. For this new job, I basically can't wear anything that has been my daily uniform up until this point. Sleeveless shirts, skirts, bracelets, open-toe shoes & heels = NO. Pants, shirts with sleeves, totally flat closed-toe shoes = YES.

It also equals boring, but whatever.

I'm not sure yet, but I hope that necklaces = YES, 'cause if I can't wear any jewelry at all, I might just ass-plode. But I saved the reciepts, so I can return them if I can't wear them.

I basically spent the whole day in either A: the mall or B: a giant discount store. And let me tell 'ya, a $15 off $75 coupon at Penney's brings out the macaws in DROVES. I actually had to wait in line for the dressing room. The entire store was simply a-flutter. A-flutter, I say!

And it seems as though the entire apparel and accessories industry somehow knew that I would be getting this job, and that they decided to sell nothing but formal shorts (don't get me started) and cute little shirts without sleeves. And TONS of adorable sundresses that I long to take home. And gorgeous big earrings and bracelets. Especially ones that make great jingly noises. And the shoes! Not a single cute flat under $50 was to be found. Dammit! But there were tons of great slides and little heeled flats. Not to mention all the great heeled sandals which beg to be taken out on the town. Sigh.

I had some good eats, though. I treated myself to a $2 hot dog/ lemonade combo at Target. YUM. Since I still haven't done the dishes from vacation, and thus want to avoid the kitchen at all costs, I treated myself to KFC for dinner. Purchased mostly as a nod to PMS, but still so tasty. My God, that crap is so freakin' good.

I fell asleep in a food coma about 9:30.

I think I'm set for Monday. Sunpass is installed in the new car, she's got a full tank of gas, new clothes are ready to be washed and ironed, and there's food in the fridge for bag lunch.

I've got about 75 lbs of paperwork to fill out for the new job, not to mention an entire product line to learn, hopefully quickly.

I also need clean the house, and try and get some sewing done. I'm working on a great little flamingo piece that's almost done, and I want to get another tank done before too long. And I really need to make a new CD or twelve. Damn. Anybody have a favorite road CD? I'm gonna need a few...

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A DAY MAKES

Yesterday at this time I had only a job. Today I have not only a job, but a car of my very own:

    Her right side...

    and from the left...

    Now we have a fleet!

She's a 2005 Hyundai Elandra GT hatchback, black (obviously) with grey leather interior and a sun/moon roof. Choice. We paid exactly what we paid for the other one, but this one has 10000 miles on her. 50,000 mile / 6 year warranty. We paid about 1800 dollars under Blue Book, too. B had a good time 'talking the guy down' from the ridiculous price that they told us first. Not too shabby. And boy was one of the salesmen swarmy. Ew.

Her first CD was the Hotel Costes No. 7. No name yet. B suggested Betty. That's what I'm leaning towards so far. Suggestions? Yeah. I'm goin' with Betty.

    I heart her.

    WE BARE ALL...EXIT NOW!!!!!!

Another busy weekend around here. But not too busy for cupcakes:

I highly recommend Duncan Hines Butter Yellow Cake Mix...

Trav actually said that they were the best cupcakes he'd ever had. Nice.

But first, here's some pics of what I was doing all day on Wednesday instead of researching What I'm Feeling Wednesday. I was at "Taste of Winter Park". I designed and decorated the table of a certain restaruant's booth for someone who happens to work there. It was pretty fun and there was some really good food there.

Lovely. Can you tell how bright the sun was that day?

I used lots of fresh veggies, along with some of the brands that the restaurant uses. It was really pretty. PRAH-TTY!

So that's where I was on Wednesday.

Anyway, this weekend the boys were in town to find a new abode in Gainesville. On Saturday morning, they DRAGGED me kicking and screaming back to Hot Dog Heaven. I mean, I really didn't want to go. They had to spend HOURS convincing me that I wanted a hot dog for lunch. It was touch and go there for awhile.

Actually, it went something like this:

Trav: "Hey Mel, would you like to go get some lunch at Hot Do-"
Me: "YES YES YES, I WOULD LOVE TO GO BACK TO HOT DOG HEAVEN. TAKE ME NOW. FEED ME HOT DOGS AND FRENCH FRIES!"

I heart Hot Dog Heaven. We even took our portrait with "Big Frank". I heart him, too.

On the way back to the house, we stopped to check out a new used books store, where I found the single coolest Dover book ever printed:

Oh. My. GAH! Just look at it!

Many headers and graphics will be made. The store had a whole shelf of Dover books, including one entirely of horse illustrations. I had about 5 of them layed out on floor, wanting ALL of them. I decided on the one with the lowest price. I may go back for that horse one...

B had to work on Sunday, so I tagged along on the trek to look at houses. We saw some pretty fantastic stuff, such as this sign on the highway:

That is the single biggest sign for a strip club by the highway that I've ever seen. Evvvv-er.

Oh, and the model homes were pretty fantastic, too. I took some covert photos of the best living room ever:

    The seating...

    The remote...

Do you see where I'm going with this?

    Sha-BAM! The TV!

THAT THING IS HUGE! AWESOME! You have to get past the sage green wall color. And the sign in the bathroom, above the toilet, that said: "Come and Sit a Spell". I shit you not. (Pun sorta not intended.)

It was fun. Gentlemen, thanks for coming down and thanks for letting me tag along. I'd be happy to trade you cupcakes for hot dogs anytime.

Hmm. I think there's a dirty joke there in that last line...

THE SUN WAS HOT, THE SALES WERE COLD

    $2.25

That's all I spent at the flea market today. Dissapointing really. I was the only one who even bought anything.

I got these lovely printed dinner napkins for the guest bath for $2,

and this metal 'S' (I already had the frame) for 25¢.

But it was still totally fun, and I love looking at all of that stuff. And there was some really cool stuff.

But, seriously, things have gotten kinda expensive. And why they cannot prevent their main ladies room from functioning improperly I'll never figure out.

I have to say the only thing that was an improvement over last year, was that I can now tell myself no. Which has always been a problem for me. Most people just buy what they like. But see, I like EVERYTHING, so I've had to learn how to say NO. Yes, that (insert interesting objet d'art here) is great, but what am I going to do with it? Where will it go? I was much easier this time on the 'storage unit' and the ole' bank account.

Although I hate when you start looking at stuff in the morning, you get that "omigod I really want that but I don't want to spend all my money yet" feeling. I kept putting down $9 and $10 items that I really would have liked to have taken home, but didn't buy 'cause I wanted to save my dough "just in case I see something better". So I ended up going to the ATM and taking out another $20 just to ease my mind a little bit and take the pressure off. Not that I would have spent it, but I felt better just knowing that it was there.

I'm totally going back next month. The last EXTRAVAGANZA (I so love that word) till next November.

    RESTORATION

So B actually had 2 days off. IN A ROW.

It was rather nice. We did absolutely nothing of consequence, and we ate good food. It was a proper weekend with breakfast at noon and movies until midnight. (Especially my favorite movie of all time.) I actually went to the gym by myself and ommigod, I kinda liked it.

Other than that, just waiting for Friday so I'se can get the ole school loan officer off my back (and off my phone) and then move on with my life.

Coming up: Renniger's Flea Market EXTRAVAGANZA on Saturday. Very pumped. B is "quite dissapointed" that he has to work a double shift on that day and won't be able to join us. I'm hoping to find lots of crap I don't need and didn't know I couldn't live without.

ANOTHER WEEK, ANOTHER INTERVIEW, ANOTHER TEST

    Foofty!!! What a week!

It all started on Sunday with 'Kristmas in Kissimmee'. Ahh, the holidays.

This was followed by 'Sinus Infection Flare-Up in Altamonte Springs' on Monday, which was closely followed on Tuesday by a cold call off of CareerBuilder from a recruiter from a national homebuilder located here in O-town asking me to come in and apply for a position in their Design Studio on Wednesday morning. VERY good pay, bonus based on commission, AMAZING company, definite advancement opportunities.

    "Okay!", I said.

And it was okay until he reminded me to 'dress appropriately' in business attire. My mistake was in thinking, "No problem! I've still got all my clothes from studio critiques back in school". Unfortunately, my upper half has started growing into proportion to my lower half, and none of my suits (which I've been saving for 5 damn years) fit any longer. Which means I spent most of the little Christmas gift money we had on a new suit to wear to this interview. (Gifts this year may be arriving in January and will be considered 'Welcome to 2006' gifts...)

God, shopping blows when you can't find what you want, and when you don't really want to spend the money in the first place.

Desperation really set in, and instead of just going into Penney's (filthy, filthy Penney's) to pick up a new suit jacket to go with black pants (and shoes, and bag) which I already had, I ended up not being able to find anything (at least nothing without sequins) in black, and ended up buying an entire new ensemble out of sheer panic. It didn't help that I didn't make it to the mall until almost 7:30pm. It was so bad, that I think I bought something at every single check-out counter in the store. Argh. To soothe my guilt (and stretched-out bank account) I had planned on returning a large portion of the outfit, but I didn't count on the lack of AC in the lobby of the interview place. And I nicked the heel of one of the shoes. Which I can live with, but means I can't return them like I planned. DAMN! Damn, damn.

The whole debacle also involved running to Kinko's at 11pm that night to print a copy of my resume and reference, since I wasn't willing to sell our car to be able to purchase ink for our printer at home. (Why does that crap have to cost so much anyway?)

But the interview wasn't really an interview so much as it was a Skills Assessment Test. B and I joked about taking the SAT's again, and we weren't far off.

But a miracle happened that day. I had on my new clothes/ armor, I actually found the place, I listened to my favorite CD of late in the car, and I was the first to arrive so I could scope out the competition on my own terms. And I wasn't the only one called in. I met the others face to face, and felt my old, extremely competitive, presentation self spring to life inside me. I made small talk with the very cool receptionist, I was direct and alert during the test instructions and I worked that shit. The confidence was POURING out of me. I'm thinking, "I've got this". I realized I really missed feeling that way in the years since I left school...

The test wasn't really a test (although it DID involve math again), it was more of a personality thing with questions such as:

"If your fellow co-worker walked up to you and threw a cup of coffee in your face during a meeting with a client would you:
A- Calmly wipe your face with the hankerchief you keep in your jacket pocket (you always like to be prepared) and go on with your meeting
B- Attack her right then and there, as you don't like to put off till tomorrow what you can accomplish today
C- Excuse yourself to clean up, and leave your clients alone in the office to fend for themselves
D- Yell "Fuck You!" to your co-worker and tell them "I'll see you in the parking lot after work so you'd best be prepared, you skanky biotch"
    E- I'm not sure

Remember, there are no right or wrong answers."

I'm paraphrasing here, but you get the idea. The restaurant does these too, and there damn well IS a right and a wrong answer. More often than not, there's also an subtly comical answer and there were a couple of times I had to stifle a laugh during the test.

And that was it. 90 minutes later, I was free for the rest of the day (at least until I had to pick up B at work...did I forget to mention that I had to drive him to work at 4:30 AM so I could have the car?) so I treated myself to a stroll around the mall to do some window shopping and stretch my legs, 'cause that's how I do. They'll compute the results and may even call me back to schedule an interview.

The place just had this amazing cool vibe, and made me REALLY want it. Of course, I've probably just jinxed myself by admitting all of this, and I will now NOT be getting the job. My lack of formal sales experience will probably be detrimental to me getting the job, and may even be why I don't get it. My argument is that if you're a artist or designer, you're entire exsistance is sales - selling yourself, your ideas, your plan, convincing people what will be best for them is what you really want. But ces't la vie. Hey, at least I got a suit jacket that actually fits out of the deal. And some really cute shoes...and a pair of slacks...and a new purse to match...

That night we went out for (what turned out to be free) drinks and a very late dinner with B's compadres from the area restaurants to welcome B's new GM and his wife to the area, then crashed into bed about 1:30 AM.

Thursday was B's birfday and the culmination of a year's worth of attempts to re-create the Japanese food at Hei-wa's on Wilmington Island in Skevannah. WE WERE FINALLY SUCCESSFUL! Now we don't ever have to suffer through the truly bad Teppan-yaki here again. Thaaaaannnk Christ.

Yesterday, we slept in, went to the gym, had more yakitori for lunch (is it wrong to eat the exact same meal three times in a row?) and then headed out for a VERY late start to check out all the Christmas decorations at some of the Disney resorts, and stopped at the Grand Floridian for a little, suprisingly affordable, snackey-poo. B tried some pate/ terrine for the first time, and we had tea with strawberries and cream for dessert...PINKIES OUT PEOPLE!

We've become inspired by the INCREDIBLE gingerbread and chocolate displays and will be making something (God only knows) out of gingerbread tonight. The house at the Grand Floridian actually has a merchandise counter INSIDE of it, where they sell replicas of the house and cookies and candy. It's 2 stories tall! Another hotel actually has an almost full scale carousel made entirely out of chocolate. FREAKIN' AWESOME.

So that was our week. Now it's finally the weekend, and I can actually get some 'work' done.

    WELCOME TO FALL, GENTLEMEN

So it's officially fall. The ginormus tree out side our house is starting to change colors. Yea!

I probably won't be able to post the new theme on the first, what with all the shopping and all, so I thought I'd put it up today. In fact, I probably won't be posting much at all for the next 2 or 3 weeks, just so 'ya know. I decided to go all Gorey on your asses for the holiday. Enjoy.

In other news, Stacy and I had a great time last week checking out all the thrift stores in Castleberry. It was a good week for junk all around. I got this kick-ass paint by number and this slightly disturbing cutting board at thrift stores, and I picked these reindeer out of a box next to the dumpster by our house. Score! We also got some stuff for Halloween, including the stuff for the crystal ball, and the fabric for the moldering tablecloth for the food table. And the blue tablecloth for the fortune telling room. Not counting the crystal ball, I spent $5 total. Awesome. I love thrifting...

I've been sewing so much my fingers are sore. I got 4 done this weekend, with 8 more to go. I just have to make the frames and I should be set. I'm running out of thread, so a trip back to the fabric store is in order. They're turning out REALLY cool, and I hope SCAD bites. That would be choice.

I'm ready for guests, just a few little things here and there. So come on down!!

    Can't wait!

    YES, NOW PLEASE.

Omigod, I want this and I want it now:

    A Wooden iPod.

    So.Freakin.Cool.

DESPERATE TIMES CALL FOR DESPERATE MEASURES...

I made a little purchase today. I'm so weak. If it takes more than 24 hours, I'm sooooo writing those bitches a very sternly worded letter.

Still not much else doing, comments are working, sort of. I'm trying to stay offline (I have been moving the computer to the dining room to remove the temptation) so that I can actually get something done with the portfolio. It's hard to be off the grid for more than 2 days, though...

I had to go to craphole today and I feel so filthy now. Why does that place have to be so disgusting? Why does it have to be so damn cheap? A tiny little piece of me dies each time I'm too poor to shop at my beloved Target and have to go slumming at craphole. Blech. I was behind a british couple today as I was checking out and my only thought was (other than 'Damn!, she's very brave to choose to wear that outfit with those shoes-and socks") was, "This is their American experience?". I really wanted to slip them the directions to Target as I was leaving, but I figured the damage had already been done. Cest la vie.

    BOOHYAH, BITCHES!!!!

Eat my bid, you friggin' EBAY natzi.

Why do people have to be like that? Thinkin' your all cool, 'I can raise my bid just to mess with you; ha, ha, ha.'

Needless to say, I got my damn lamps. I had to bid down to the last second, but I got the F**kers.

    Foofty.

Never again. Mark my words. Never again...

SOMEONE STOP ME. PLEASE, I BEG YOU.

I forgot another side effect of bidding on EBAY: uncontrollable checking of what you just bid on to see if there is any change whatsoever.

I cannot stop. I have 5 hours left. It dosen't matter all that much, right.

I'm bordering on obsession totally obsessed.

This is a cry for help. B, why aren't you home yet to rip me away from the computer.

    IS ANYBODY THERE?!?!?!?!!?

    TIME HEALS ALL WOUNDS

I've jumped back into the EBAY pool.

It's been such a long time since I bought anything there that my last name was Householder on the profile. So long that I may have forgotten the vindictive people (other than myself of course) who wait till the VERY LAST SECOND to start bidding and steal your precious auction right out from under you.

But now I'm prepared. Now I can watch those bastards through Safari. I can have my email sing when I've been outbid. I can check my bid every 5 seconds through auctionwatch.

Now I have a 'Screamingly Fast' connection and processor. They're not gonna get me this time.

And don't get me started on PayPal.

Why do I do this to myself? Because they have such good crap. SUCH. GOOD. CRAP.

    Wish me luck.

    GOD? IT'S ME, MEL.

Things finally seem to be falling into place. Sort of. Let's just say it's less of a mess than it was 5 days ago.

    But it's still a mess...

    In other news:

    Dear God,
Give me the strength to go through the storage unit, and throw away what must be pitched. Why am I paying to store all that crap anyway? It's not like I'm using it, right? Right?

    That's all for today,
    -Mel

PS. Um, yeah. We live in Florida now. Why is it so friggin cold? Just asking. Peace, Love, and Cheese Fries.

    I WANT MY TWO DOLLARS!

Whatever made me think that I could manage our finances? What the hell was I smoking that day?

I have been working very hard recently to get our credit rates lowered and up until this point I had thought myself to be quite successful. According to Suze Orman, I am also making my credit rating stronger by doing so. Score one for me.

Maybe not though, since I have inadvertantly paid off one account twice. Apparently, when applying for a super-low interest rate card, I put down an accout number to be transfered, and in the meantime (since it took like, forever for the approval to come through) I transfered it off with another card after I called and lowered the rate, forgetting that I had applied to have it transfered.

    Confused yet?

Well, both transfers (for the same account) went through, and now I have a very large surplus, that I would very much like back. Easy enough to accomplish, except that it will take 14 days to get my check.

And therein lies the problem, since we need something to be able to go out of town next week. This is my M-O: Use the cards when we're out of town, pay them off in big chunks from the bonuses and 5-week months and keep my credit healthy in the process. I had planned on emptying the double-paid account and keeping it open to balance out my debt to credit ratio. The rate isn't all that great, so I hadn't planned on using it anymore, just letting it sit there. I need my new super-lowzero rate fixed(!) card empty to transfer the last high rate store card (sorry, Target) and get it off our backs. But I guess I'll just use that for next week's festivities and pay it off when the expense report money comes in from being in Atlanta. That'll work, right?

God. Now I'm cornfused. Anyway, I think I fixed it, but I had to spend the last hour and a half calling various companies, fending off numerous card protection offers and the like and speak to some not so helpful people. Argh.

Not that any of you really care about this, but this is my blog and I can talk about whatever I want.

In semi-related news, why is it that whenever I purchase something quasi spur-of-the-moment, if I go back to the store the next week, it's always on sale or something? (I'm soooo looking in your direction, OLD NAVY.) That is totally aggrivating. But whatever. I just like my new shirt. It makes me feel all girly-girl.
