MY AESTHETIC REPRESENTATION

We were asked to find an image of something that most represented our aesthetic.  This is what I chose.  It's a photo by Julius Schulman, first published in LIFE magazine in 1950.

It has just about everything I not only love, but regularly work into my designs: blocks, woodgrain, grey, red, books, metal, fabulous 50's hair, clothes and makeup, alcohol.

You know, the basics.  I really love this image.  I printed it out this morning and the more I looked at it, the more I loved it.

Seriously.  November Domino.  SO GREAT.  Back when House & Garden folded, I didn't think that any shelter mag would really take the place of instant inspiration for me, but Domino is really stepping it up lately, and with the new art direction this month, I'm weak with ideas...it's like they know exactly what's turning me one right now.

HI.

Life has been flying by, as life in September is wont to do.  Except this year it has been even crazier, but it's been better handled, so not so bad.  Work is going well, but we don't talk about that here, do we?

Things I've wanted to post been stacking up, and yet, I still don't ever post.  WTF?

I saw a sticker on a the back window of a car that said "I 'heart' Your Mom".  It looked like they had made it themselves, which made my heart sing a little bit.

Fringe...very good.  Suprisingly good TV all around lately.  And yet, no fashion shows...which makes me very sad.  Bite me, DISH.

Did some fall cleaning around the house yesterday:  finished some tiny canvases that I've had since December (no shit) and got some of B's photos out here in the real world.  I love 'em, and no longer have to go into his bathroom to view them. Moved some of the other artwork around, too, and finally cracked the box on the gift of light from my Mom.  Red, modern, dimmable light.  I want to eat it it's so beautiful... 

OMFG the humidity is OUT OF CONTROL.

THINGS I'M LOVING ABOUT THE OLYMPICS

A list in seven parts:

1. The Russian's uniforms.

2. The font that NBC is using for their on-screen graphics, it's reminiscent of Salaryman, which is a fave of mine.

3. Canada's national anthem.

4. The ice dancing competition. What can I say, except that I love it.

5. Curling. Strangely interesting. Constantly on, so you have to watch it.

6. Freestyle skiing. How their bodies can handle that abuse is amazing. And the jumps are cool!

7. The discipline graphics are just beautiful. When they're shown in color, they look like old art deco images.

BEAUTIFUL EVEREST

So we got to ride Expedition: Everest at Disney yesterday and it was SO COOL. The ride itself is fantastic, but for me, the queue was the best part. It is so detailed and completely immersive. I love the colors and the motifs and even the fonts they chose. Simply beautiful.

The details were incredible: little yetis on the temple trim, custom expedition stickers and patches on the walls, lots of Everest exhibits and displays, 'photographs' of the last known hikers and the yeti. The outdoor courtyard is so peaceful and beautiful, even the first half of the ride itself is so beautifully landscaped.

MMMMMM...FONTS...

I have a thing for fonts. Not words, just the fonts that they're written with.

I found this today via Design Observer.

Oh. My. Gah. They are sooooo beautiful. Simple but complilcated, and easy to mix. There's got to be a project in there somewhere. I could totally look at these pics for hours.

Hours and hours and hours. Eons. Millenia.

IT'S LIKE CHRISTMAS & MY BIRTHDAY ALL WRAPPED IN ONE

Attention People! How could I have almost forgotten it!

Today is Day 1 of New York Fashion Week for Spring 2005! Now, granted, it's only menswear (yawn...) until this weekend, when the true fabulousness will commence. Please consult the website to re-schedule/cancel any appointments you may have during the next week which may conflict with the viewing of the fashion shows. Oh, and can I just say that Olympus totally stole my 'Rants. Raves. General Ramblings-on.' font for their front page. (see 'Spring Fashion 2005') Apparently, I'm stylish. Who knew!
