Waaaaayyyyy back in 1999 a little company called Netflix was just starting out. Since you couldn't rent that many DVD's in a regular video store, when we came across this little site we were amazed at the selection and seriously thought that we were getting screwed somewhere along the way. This was too good to be true! It had to be! I remember actually checking the BBB website and trying to research it before we signed up. Besides, the internet cannot be trusted, right?
It cost $24.99 a month for 3 movies at a time, and it took about 5 days to get a movie, which shipped from Washington state. The movies came in the most ingenious plastic sleeve things (which they did away with for some reason) and that's really when our home theater obsession started. It was the first time I ever saw a Criterion Collection movie, you could get entire TV shows, man they had everything! Even 'adult' movies. Ooo la la!
It was great. But we had to get rid of it during the dark days of employment, which was for the best. It sure was hard to tell the extremely nice lady on the phone that we had to stop service, and that no, it certainly wasn't anything they had done, we just couldn't afford it. Sigh.
But no longer, we re-signed up last night and are eagerly awaiting the arrival of our first movies. Yay!!! Times are different, and we're in a better place, not to mention that we've watched our meager collection of flicks about 739,458 times. (Yeah, I counted.)
Netflix sure has changed, though. Mostly they have more shipping centers, so it's 1 day turnaround. Excellent. The queue is a lot more streamlined, and we each get our own, now. (No more shiesty manuevers by putting your movies to the top of the queue. Yeah, I'm looking at YOU, Sikorski.) You can acutally watch the trailers right away, they don't just send you to IMDB. Not to mention that it's WAY cheaper now. I can now rent all the movies that I'm WAY to embarrased to go see in the theaters. (Um, like Honey. Ooooorrrrrrrrrrr The Prince and Me, or even Mrs. Brown. God, I'm so boring...) But they've gotten rid of their Criterion section. What gives? Do they just not have them all in one place anymore?
In all reality though, it's just one more place for me to waste time on the interweb.
"Wait, I've been sitting here rating movies and loading up my queue for almost an hour now? Where does the time go?"

Ahhh....did B tell you I just got done doing a free trial with Netflix?
It was reallllllllly good!
I mainly enjoyed it (renting hard to find b horror films), but Duane and I both got use outta a few.
(and no, not any adult titles).
(which, by the way, I didn't know they had or else I woulda had a different queue......)
MAN OH MAN netflix has been the best thing to come to our house since sophisticated sewage. i have basically ONLY rented tv shows and john hates it! i highly suggest Freaks & Geeks for some good laughs and Degrassi Jr. High for some life lessons 80's style! THANK YOU JESUS!
I tried to tell B that he would really like Freaks & Geeks, but he went for Team America for the first delivery.
He does have both discs of the Adventures of Pete and Pete on there, though. And I'm starting to have Deadwood withdrawls already so that may be coming for a visit. I sure as hell not paying $80/ season.
Trav, the next time you come to town, there is apparently a video store that specializes in hard to find b horror and foreign films. Haven't been yet, but have heard really great things.
SWEET girl!
You know I am there!
Yeh isn't it funny how TV shows are now ALL being released on DVD?
LOVES IT.
Team America sucks except for like 1 or 2 songs they sing in the movie.
Bri will have to tell me what he thinks of that one.
Did he check out the Simpsons upcoming DVD box sets? The packaging is off the freakin' COOL CHARTS! (and you know I am not a huge fan).
Also, did you hear that Futurama is supposedly doing a straight to DVD movie or something?
Get that Queue ready girrrrrl.
Oh, and PS cuz I forgot to earlier I think: Your new banner on here ROX!!!!!!!!!!!
oh lord don't get me going on pete and pete and clarissa!!! i have yet to get those and we'll get divorced over it for sure. YESS! and deadwoos is so good i can hardly breathe over it
OMG! Clarissa!!! She really DOES explain it all.
Oh yeah, thanks Trav. The only thing that bothers me about the new header is that everytime I look at it, it makes me want a denver omelette with a side of toast.
And orange juice.
man i stink! having never had cable when i grew up, and only really fully experiencing it when i was in the big wis... i don't think i ever saw clarissa explains it all. i think i maybe saw one episode at a friends house or something... so much to catch up on. someone give me a million dollars so i can sign up for netflix!
p.s. i had no idea netflix had been around for so long! crazy!
