    SEWING FOR DUMMIES

I got my machine all fixed up and I was all raring to start sewing again, but I've been crippled by this debilitating fear that I would spend the money on some cool fabric and a pattern to make a dress, then royally 'eff it up because sewing is like, hard.

Did I mention it was hard?

So anyway, I'm reading a novel last night and one of the characters is setting the dinner table with cloth napkins that she made herself.

What a brilliant idea, I think. I use cloth napkins everyday. I could make cloth napkins for a lot less than I buy them at Crate & Barrel.

    Wait.

I could SELL cloth napkins if I embroidered them.

Awesome. I took my 2nd SCAD check (it finally arrived) and went to the fabric store to check out the clearance section.

So I've been sewing all day today. ALL day. And this is all I have to show for it:

This fabric was 1 dollar. The thread cost more than the fabric, but whatever. I love the feathers, and it seems so 50's somehow. They're a little small (because the first mistake of the day was cutting the fabric wrong) so they're the perfect size for a drinky-poo or a canape. Lovely.

I never knew that sewing 4 straight seams could be so FREAKING difficult. My machine and I are currently taking a break from one another. I'm tired of yelling at it and it's tired of being yelled at.

We may need couples counseling but I think we'll make it through.

love those napkins - they're very ra sha sha swanky!!

my sister made me a potholder recently with fabric featuring various pinup girls (jenn, you'll remember the apron i wore to the cakewalk party, it's that same fabric). while she was sewing it, she decided it'd be more for decoration since it was pretty thin and would probably burn the hands if actually used to hold hot pots. so she made it with a hanging loop, to you know, hang with. and then continued working on it, and when she was done she held it up and crap. she has all the ladies hanging upside down!!

it just makes us chuckle a whole lot. p.s. i saw playing by heart a while back when i worked at blockbuster and i heart jon stewart!
