    QUICK QUESTION

Hey there party people! Been staring at the computer alot, re-doing B's blog and making some little slideshows and such, but haven't really had anything to talk about of any substance.

But I have a question: Would you work for a company that you didn't exactly have much in common with, except for your graphic style?

I got an email from a graphic design company here in O-town, basically telling me to apply for one of their staff artist positions. I am sure I am one of 500 other people who got the same email. They were very clear that there are no guarantees, etc, etc gave me a list of how the process goes. ("#2: We'll respond to those candidates we feel would best compliment our company via phone." Is this normal? I'm new to this whole industry job protocol thing...) So I was all, cool, something in town, I'll go check it out.

So I go to the website and the designs are not that bad. In fact, the stuff gels with me aesthetically. But I keep looking, and something seems a bit off. Not off, just something...and then I realize that this is a company that makes nicely done tour shirts and merchandise for bands. Christian bands. And stuff for youth gatherings and retreats.

    So. Thoughts?

It's not like I'm heathen or anything, but I am SO not a religious person. (Unless sarcasm is a new religion I haven't heard about yet.) Jebus just isn't all that 'magical' to me anymore. Would this be a bit of a reverse selling my soul?

Yes, it's a job. But would I be able to be ME at this job? Constant censorship? Or, is an art department an art department an art department?

"We believe that a single shirt with a thought provoking message can turn into a great way for the wearer to share their faith with the World."

    Talk to me, people!

oh man, that's a good question. the only thing i can relate to it is when i've found ads for graphic design jobs out here but they turn out to be for porn. i'm not really against porn, but i don't really want porn to be on my resume, if you know what i mean. and i think you do. starring roles only, none of the behind the scenes for me, thanks.

but the religious stuff is different - i say go ahead and apply, knowing that you don't have to make any hard fast decisions yet. you've got time to go in for the interview and see how they work, you've got time to see if you like the people you're gonna be doing stuff with. and if they're too get your god on for ya you don't have to take the job, you know?

i'm right there with ya on feeling weird about it. we do jesus tees at my work sometimes, and every time i see someone working on em it cracks me up because none of us in the department are very religious and the shirts all sound like they're making fun of god even though they're serious.

and i think the best thing to say in the interview is you relate most to the misfit jewish girl in the movie "saved". then you're a shoo-in!

    Mel-
I know that's a tough call to make, but like Steph says, I say go ahead and apply.
WHen you go in to interview, you can feel out the way their workplace flows. Also, if they ask you what denomination you are or what religion you follow, you can kindly thank them and get the hell outta there.
I am sure there would be others in that art department that aren't very religious though. We're artists. We question EVERYTHING. We don't follow the flock.
Betcha be workin' alongside some atheists up in that piece too!
